On an island each person only ever tells the truth or only ever lies. Ana says Ben and she are the same kind; Ben says Cara is truthful; Cara says Ana lies. How many are liars?
This is the tier's one puzzle with no arithmetic at all — only what each person's words force about the others. The pivot is a small, delightful lemma: a claim of the form "so-and-so and I are the SAME kind" gives the other person away no matter who says it. If a truth-teller says it, it is true and they match; if a liar says it, it is false and they differ from a liar — either way the other one is a truth-teller. "Different kinds" is the mirror.
Why this sheet works
Once one person is pinned that way, every other statement is a plain claim by someone whose kind is now known, so it settles its subject outright. The whole puzzle unrolls in a straight line — anchor, then pin, then pin — with no guessing and no case-splitting. The answer asked for is a single number, how many of the three are liars, so there is nothing to argue about once the reasoning is done.
