What to practice this year
Factoring is the year's workhorse, and it is worth separating from solving. Taking out a common factor, spotting a difference of two squares, and factoring x² + bx + c are three distinct reflexes, and a student who has drilled each one recognizes which to reach for when a quadratic equation finally asks to be solved. The sheets keep them apart for that reason, then bring them together on the equations.

Writing a rule from a situation is the year's other direction. The story comes first and the equation is built from it, and a student who can say what the 12 and the 25 in y = 12x + 25 stand for has understood more than one who can only graph it.
