What to practice this year

Factoring is the year's workhorse, and it is worth separating from solving. Taking out a common factor, spotting a difference of two squares, and factoring x² + bx + c are three distinct reflexes, and a student who has drilled each one recognises which to reach for when a quadratic equation finally asks to be solved. The sheets keep them apart for that reason, then bring them together on the equations.

Why these skills come next

Trigonometry begins with the definition, not the calculator. A trig ratio is a fraction of a right triangle's sides — sin A = 3/5, read straight off the figure — and every triangle here is a Pythagorean triple so the ratio stays exact. That is the ground the solving sheets stand on: once the ratio is a known thing, right-triangle trigonometry uses it to find a missing side or angle.
