What to practice this year
The multi-digit algorithms get harder in a specific way: multiplication reaches three-digit by two-digit and beyond, and long division moves from a one-digit divisor to two. Sizing each sheet by digit length keeps the jump deliberate — a child who owns 3-digit by 1-digit meets 3-digit by 2-digit as one new step, not a wall.
Why these skills come next
Order of operations is the year's new idea, and it is really the first taste of algebraic structure: an expression has one agreed value, and parentheses can change what happens first. Because the point is the order rather than the arithmetic, the multiplication and division inside each expression stay small while the reasoning does the work.
