What's on this sheet

The difficulty is in the labels. Not every tick can carry a number at this size, so a child has to work out which mark is 2¼ and which is 2⅜ from the marks around it. That reading is what these sheets practice. Every answer is a count or a spot on the ruler, so nothing has to be added in fractions in a blank.

Why this sheet works

The sheet is a reading page. A plot that a child draws from a list of measurements is the other half of the same skill, and it works well as a follow-up: measure ten pencils to the nearest eighth of an inch, then draw what these pages show.

  1. A line plot is not bars to read off a scale — each mark is one plant. So the number ALONG the bottom and the number of marks ABOVE it are two different quantities, and the question wants one of them.
  2. Counting the stacks: 2 at 2, 2 at 2⅛, 2 at 2¼, 3 at 2⅜, 3 at 2½, 3 at 2¾, 3 at 2⅞, 1 at 3⅛, 4 at 3¼, 3 at 3⅜, 1 at 3½.
  3. 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 3 + 1 = 27 — so the answer is 27.
