A simple way through geometry
The early years are about covering and going round. Area starts as counting unit squares, not as a formula, because that is what area is — and perimeter starts as walking the edge. The formulas arrive once the counting has made them obvious, which is the order the standards use and the order these sheets follow.
Why this order works
The middle years widen the vocabulary. A child who has only measured rectangles meets triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, learns to name angles and count folds of symmetry, and finds that a box has both a volume and a surface. The one mistake this stretch keeps producing is reading a slant side as a height, so those figures never label a slant side at all.
