What's on this sheet

The grid shows where the point starts and nothing else. Marking the image would print the answer, and marking it hollow would let a child read the coordinates off the squares instead of working them out — so the figure gives the one thing that helps, which is seeing where the point sits relative to the mirror line or the origin.

Why this sheet works

No sheet states a rule. "Reflecting in the x-axis negates y" is four words and it is the answer, and a child handed it has something to misremember — the mirror is the x-axis but the number that changes is the y, which sounds backwards until you see why. The step-by-step walk asks how far the point is from the mirror instead, and the rule falls out as something to notice.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

  1. Start where the point is: (−2, 0). The move is in the y-axis, and the question is only where those two numbers end up.
  2. A mirror keeps the distance and swaps the side. This point is 2 left of the y-axis, so its image is 2 right of it.
  3. Nothing moved up or down, so the y-coordinate stays at 0. The image is (2, 0). Notice which number changed: mirroring in the y-axis changes the x.
