What's on this sheet
Every shape appears upright and turned. A child who has learned "a square has four" from one picture has learned something about that picture, not about squares, and turning a square forty-five degrees makes it look like a diamond — which is the classic mistake this standard is about.
Why this sheet works
The parallelogram is the shape worth waiting for. It looks as though it should fold in half, and it does not: neither diagonal nor either midline maps it onto itself. Children reliably answer two, and finding out why the answer is zero is a better lesson than any number of squares.
