Rounding is the first place-value skill that asks a child to act on the places rather than just read them. To round, you find the place you are aiming for, look at the digit just to its right, and decide: 5 or more rounds the target place up, 4 or less leaves it alone — and every digit after it becomes zero. Doing this well means a child genuinely understands that the 8 in 480 and the 8 in 4,800 are different sizes.
Why this order works
Each sheet fixes one place — nearest ten, hundred, or thousand — so the decision is practised many times instead of guessed at once. The numbers are chosen so none is already round and the telling halfway cases turn up on purpose, and because every answer is an exact whole number, these sheets can be worked on the practice page as well as on paper.
