A simple way through remainders

The idea arrives before the algorithm. When seventeen is shared among five, each gets three and two are left over — 17 ÷ 5 = 3 R 2. Working this with small facts first lets a child see that the remainder is simply what will not fit, and that it is always smaller than the number you are dividing by. That single check — remainder less than divisor — catches most mistakes on its own.

Why this order works

Long division with remainders is the same idea on bigger numbers. The divide-multiply-subtract-bring-down ladder runs exactly as it does for even division; it just ends on a non-zero line instead of a zero. Because the leftover finally has somewhere to go, children stop forcing the last step and the algorithm makes sense.
