What this year is really about
Facts within twenty are expected to come from memory now, not from strategy. If they still take a beat, the fastest fix is not a two-digit worksheet — it is a week of short fact pages, because every regrouping problem is built from those same facts and a shaky foundation shows up as arithmetic slips a child cannot explain.
Regrouping is the year's landmark, and carrying and borrowing are worth separating. Carrying moves ten ones up into the tens column; borrowing unpacks one ten back down into ones. Sheets here can make every problem require it, which is deliberate — a mixed page lets a child coast on the ones that do not, and the case they avoid is exactly the case they need.
Multiplication arrives at the end of the year as equal groups and arrays rather than as tables to chant. Division facts follow immediately, because the two are the same fact family read in two directions, and a child who sees that gets both for the price of one.
