Why this sheet works

Before asking for speed, connect each equation to an array or equal groups: 4 × 3 can mean four groups of three. That picture gives memorized facts something meaningful to attach to and prepares children to understand division as the inverse operation.

How this one works

  1. 10 × 3 means 10 groups with 3 in each one — 10 rows of 3. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
  2. Added up, that is 3 written 10 times — nobody wants to do that. Turn it round: 3 × 10 is the same amount, and it is only 3 lots of 10 to add instead.
  3. If 3 × 10 will not come, split the 10 at five: 3 × 5 = 15, and 3 × 5 = 15. Together that is 15 + 15 = 30.
  4. So 10 × 3 = 30.
