A simple way through multiplication
Three ideas underpin every multiplication fact, and it is worth a child meeting all three before the drilling starts. Equal groups: 4 × 3 is four groups of three. Arrays: the same fact drawn as four rows of three, which makes the answer countable. Repeated addition: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, the bridge from the addition a child already owns. A child who has seen all three has somewhere to fall back to when a fact will not come.
Why this order works
Commutativity halves the work and is rarely pointed out plainly enough. 7 × 6 and 6 × 7 are the same array turned sideways, so a child learning the facts is really learning about half as many as the grid suggests. Saying that out loud changes how big the task feels.
