The strategy is to split every twelve into a ten and a two. 12 × 7 is 10 × 7 = 70 plus 2 × 7 = 14, which add to 84. Both halves come from tables a child already owns cold, so no twelve fact ever has to be memorized on its own — it is always built from two facts that are already automatic.
