What to practice this year
Negative numbers are the year's first real reversal. The number line, which has been a ruler since kindergarten, extends to the left, and subtraction stops meaning "take away" and starts meaning "how far apart, in which direction". A child who is fluent with the facts can still stall here, because the difficulty is not arithmetic — it is that 3 − 7 finally has an answer.
Why these skills come next
Ratios, percents, and fractions are one idea wearing three costumes. 3 out of 4, 3 : 4, 3/4, and 75% are the same relationship written for different jobs, and grade six is when a child is expected to move between them without re-deriving each one.
