Dividing fractions feels strange until you learn the trick that turns it into multiplication. These free printable worksheets ask a child to divide two fractions like 1/2 ÷ 3/4, using keep-change-flip to rewrite the problem, then simplify the quotient to lowest terms.

Keep-change-flip is the whole move: keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction upside down. 1/2 ÷ 3/4 becomes 1/2 × 4/3, which multiplies to 4 over 6, then simplifies to 2/3. The flipped fraction is called the reciprocal, and turning the second one over is what makes division work.

Why this sheet works

Once the problem is rewritten it is an ordinary multiplication — multiply across and reduce — so a child who has practiced multiplying fractions is already most of the way there. The one habit to build is flipping only the second fraction, never the first; getting that order right is where most mistakes hide.

  1. 5/7 ÷ 4/7 is asking a question: how many 4/7s fit inside 5/7?
  2. Lay 4/7 against it and see how many times it goes.
  3. 1 whole piece and 1/4 of another fits — so 5/7 ÷ 4/7 = 5/4.
  4. Now try multiplying by 7/4 — 4/7 turned over. It lands on the same number.
  5. That is all turning it over does — the two questions are the same question, so either way of writing it will do. 5/7 ÷ 4/7 = 5/4.
  6. Worked out in full: 5 × 7 over 7 × 4 is 35/28, which simplifies to 5/4.
