What's on this sheet
A picture makes it plain. Cut a bar into thirds and split one third into four equal strips; cut the other thirds the same way and the bar is in twelve strips, so one strip is 1/12. The denominator multiplies by the whole number because every piece is cut that many times smaller, and the numerator stays 1 because a share of one piece is still one piece, only smaller.
Why this sheet works
This is the sheet where the answer shrinks, and that is the check. Sharing something between more people gives each a smaller part, so 1/5 ÷ 2 has to be less than 1/5 — and it is 1/10. The common slip is to multiply the whole number into the numerator and write 2/5, which is bigger than the amount being shared; asking whether the answer got smaller catches it straight away.
