What this year is really about
The year's central demand is fluency within twenty, and the hard part is the middle: sums and differences that cross ten. 8 + 7 and 15 − 7 cannot be done comfortably by counting on fingers, which is why number bonds and the make-ten move matter so much this year — they are what replaces counting.
Reading the sign is its own skill, and a surprisingly common source of wrong answers. A page of pure addition lets a child switch off and add everything; a mixed page forces them to look first. That is what the mixed practice sheet is for, and it is worth using once single-operation pages are secure.
Two-digit work starts here in a limited form. Subtracting without borrowing lets a child meet column arithmetic while each column still stands on its own, so place value arrives before regrouping does.
