About this worksheet
Column addition is really two ideas stacked on top of each other. The first is the layout: ones sit under ones, tens under tens, and each column is added on its own. The second is regrouping, which only happens when a column overflows. Teaching both at once is why so many children produce answers they cannot explain — when something goes wrong, neither the child nor the adult can tell which of the two ideas failed.
These sheets isolate the first idea. The generator filters the question pool so that no column on the page ever totals more than nine, which means a child can be told, truthfully, that nothing here needs carrying. Getting one wrong now points at something specific: a misread column, a place-value slip, or a fact that is not yet fluent.
When every problem on a page is quick and correct, that is the signal to move on to addition with regrouping rather than to bigger numbers. Print with the answer key, change the theme or question count, or reopen the identical sheet later from its picnic basket code.
