A simple way through decimals

Place value comes first: knowing the 7 in 3.47 is seven hundredths is what makes everything else work. Comparing follows, because it is really the same reading — line the points up and check place by place, which fixes the classic 0.45-beats-0.5 mistake. Only then do the operations pay off.

Why this order works

Adding and subtracting are one rule — line up the points. Multiplying and dividing extend the whole-number algorithms, and multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 is just the point sliding. Every sheet keeps its answers exact — division always comes out even and 0.1 + 0.2 is 0.3, never a floating-point mess.
