Decimals in expanded form worksheets

Expanded form takes a decimal apart so each digit shows what it is worth. These free printable worksheets ask a child to write each number as a sum of its places, with an answer key to check.

What's on this sheet

Writing 37.25 as 30 + 7 + 0.2 + 0.05 is place value with nowhere to hide. The 2 cannot be written as 2, and the 5 cannot be written as 0.5, so each part of the sum is a small proof that the child knows where that digit sits.

Why this sheet works

The form also checks itself. Adding the parts has to give the number back, so a child can catch a misplaced digit without an adult. Later on, the same breakdown explains why lining up the points works when adding decimals: tenths go with tenths, hundredths with hundredths.

How this one works

37.25 in expanded form

number:37.25
3 in the tens:30
7 in the ones:7
2 in the tenths:0.2
5 in the hundredths:0.05
3 in the tens:30
7 in the ones:7
2 in the tenths:0.2
5 in the hundredths:0.05
30 + 7 + 0.2 + 0.05
  1. Expanded form takes the number apart into what each digit is worth.
  2. Take each digit in turn: the 3 is 30, the 7 is 7, the 2 is 0.2, the 5 is 0.05.
  3. Add those together and you are back to 37.25: 30 + 7 + 0.2 + 0.05.
