A simple way through integers

The first hurdle is that a minus sign now means two different things — subtraction, and "negative." A number line settles it: adding moves right, subtracting moves left, and starting below zero is just starting further left. From there the awkward case, subtracting a negative, becomes visible as moving right, which is why two minus signs turn into a plus.

Why this order works

Multiplying and dividing bring their own short rule: same signs give a positive, different signs give a negative. Stated cold it blurs, so the sheets mix the sign combinations rather than drilling one at a time — a child has to decide the sign every problem, which is exactly the decision that trips them in algebra.
