Multiplying integers worksheets

Multiplying signed numbers is a times-table fact with one decision added: which sign the answer takes. These free printable worksheets ask only for products, and every question has at least one negative factor, so the decision is never skipped.

What's on this sheet

Three sign patterns appear, in roughly equal numbers: a negative times a positive, a positive times a negative, and a negative times a negative. The first two give a negative answer and the third a positive one. −6 × 4 and 6 × −4 have the same product but are different questions, because the minus sign a child has to notice sits in a different place, so both orders are asked.

Why this sheet works

Negative times negative is the case that goes wrong, and it is asked as often as the others rather than saved for the end. A pattern makes it believable: 3 × −4 is −12, 2 × −4 is −8, 1 × −4 is −4 and 0 × −4 is 0, so each step down in the first number adds 4, and −1 × −4 has to be 4. A child who has seen that once has a reason for the rule, not just a rule.

How this one works

(-6) × (-3)

(-6)×(-3)=?
6×3=18
signs:(-6)(-3)→plus
(-6)×(-3)=18
  1. Two jobs: first the size, then the sign.
  2. Signs off: 6 × 3 = 18.
  3. Now the sign. Both numbers are negative, and two minus signs cancel each other — the way "not un-happy" just means happy. Same signs give a PLUS.
  4. Size 18, sign plus — so (-6) × (-3) = 18.
