What's on this sheet
Same signs give a positive, different signs give a negative, and that is the whole of it for both operations. The reason it still goes wrong is that addition follows a completely different rule — −6 + −3 is −9 while −6 × −3 is +18 — and a child who has just finished a page of signed addition will reach for the wrong one.
Why this sheet works
Working out the size and the sign as two separate jobs is the habit worth building. Answer 6 × 3 = 18 first, then ask what sign it takes. Doing both at once is where the slips come from, and it is why an answer that is right except for a minus sign is the most common mark lost at this level.
How this one works
One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.
(-2) × 6
- (-2) × 6 is 6 lots of -2. Start at 0 and take them one at a time — the size is ordinary times-tables, so what is left to settle is which way it goes.
- One lot of -2 goes LEFT, landing on -2.
- All 6 hops go the same way — not one of them turns round — so it can only get further from 0, never back towards it. That is the whole of why the answer is below zero.
- 6 hops of 2 is 12 of distance, all of it on the low side. So (-2) × 6 = -12.
