Dividing integers worksheets

Dividing signed numbers follows the same sign rule as multiplying, and a page of quotients shows whether a child knows the rule or only remembers it. These free printable worksheets ask only for divisions, every quotient is a whole number, and every question has a negative in it.

What's on this sheet

Each division is a multiplication run backwards. 72 ÷ −12 asks what times −12 makes 72, and the answer has to be −6, because −6 × −12 is 72. Reading a division that way gives the sign rule for free: the quotient times the divisor has to land back on the number being divided, sign included. A child who is unsure can check every answer like that without the key.

Why this sheet works

Three patterns appear: a positive number divided by a negative, a negative divided by a positive, and a negative divided by a negative. Only the last gives a positive answer. The first is the one that catches children out — in 44 ÷ −11 the number they read first has no minus sign, and the answer is still negative.

How this one works

18 ÷ (-3)

18÷(-3)=?
18÷3=6
signs:18(-3)→minus
18÷(-3)=(-6)
  1. Two jobs: first the size, then the sign.
  2. Signs off: 18 ÷ 3 = 6.
  3. Now the sign. One number is negative and one is positive — different signs give a negative.
  4. Size 6, sign minus — so 18 ÷ (-3) = (-6).
