What this year is really about
The year's real work is quantity, not symbols. A kindergartner needs to count a group accurately, know that the last number counted tells how many, decide which of two numbers is bigger, and take apart small numbers into pairs of parts. Written sums are the last thing to arrive, not the first.
That is why the sheets below open with pictures. Counting objects, picture addition, and picture subtraction all keep the mathematics on the page where a child can point at it. Only once those feel easy does a numbers-only sheet stop being a guessing game.
Keep sessions short. A kindergarten page here holds a small handful of problems on purpose — that is a complete piece of focused practice at this age, and a longer page mostly teaches a child that math is something to endure.
