What's on this sheet
TEN FRAMES ARE WHY THIS SHEET IS NOT JUST THE TEN SHEET WITH BIGGER NUMBERS. Sixteen loose pictures is sixteen things to count one at a time and lose your place in; sixteen in two frames is a full ten and six more, which is the reading a child needs before place value means anything. The second frame filling up is the picture of the teens.
Why this sheet works
The sheet starts small and builds. Counting to twenty does not mean every group has twenty in it — a child meets three, then nine, then seventeen, and the small ones are where the counting stays accurate while the frames get longer. Measured over a hundred sheets, about two questions in five land at ten or above.

- Counting one at a time is where a count goes wrong: lose your place once and the answer is out by one, and nothing afterwards shows it. Put them in groups instead.
- In 5s: 2 groups.
- Now count the groups in 5s: 5, 10. Count them a different way to check — the two ways agreeing is worth more than counting carefully once.
