A hundreds chart is ten columns wide, and that is the whole lesson: one step right is one more, one step down is ten more. These free printable worksheets print the grid with some of its numbers missing, so a child has to use both directions to fill them in.

The holes are spread over the chart rather than bunched in one corner, which is what stops a child finishing the page by counting along a single row. A gap at the end of a row is the interesting one — after 39 comes 40 on the next line, and that turn is where counting by ones stops being enough.
Choose a chart to 100 or to 120. The longer one is the grade 1 standard's own ceiling (1.NBT.A.1, count to 120 starting at any number), and the extra two rows are the ones that make a child say "one hundred eleven" rather than "eleventy one".
