Heavier or lighter worksheets

You cannot see weight by looking, and that is why a balance is such a good idea. These free printable worksheets put two things on a balance and ask a child to circle the heavier or the lighter, with an answer sheet.

The answer key prints on a separate page.

What's on this sheet

The side that goes down holds the heavier thing. That one fact is the whole page, and it takes some children a moment, because a thing up high can feel as if it is winning. Holding two objects in outstretched hands and letting the heavier hand sink shows why, and the balance then makes sense.

Why this sheet works

The objects are chosen from everyday life, such as a feather, a leaf, a book and a brick, so a child can also check the balance against what they already know. Half the questions ask for the lighter one, which takes more thought than it looks, since the lighter thing is the one up in the air.

How this one works

Circle the lighter one.

bookandfeather
lighter→feather
  1. Look at the balance. The side that goes down holds the heavier thing, and the book's side is down.
  2. So the book is heavier and the feather is lighter. The question asks for the lighter one: the feather.
