A digit's value depends only on where it sits: the 7 in 3.47 is worth seven hundredths, not seven. Sheets highlight one digit and ask its value, or name the place, or unpack the whole number as 3 + 0.4 + 0.07. Choose tenths, hundredths, or thousandths to match the grade.

  1. The places do not mirror each other around the point — there is no "oneths". Going right they are tenths, hundredths, thousandths: each one ten times SMALLER than the last.
  2. Count in from the point: the 5 sits in the tenths.
  3. Its VALUE is what it is worth there, not the digit itself: 5 in the tenths is 0.5. That gap between "5" and "0.5" is the whole of this topic.
