Dividing decimals by powers of ten worksheets

Dividing by 10, 100, or 1000 slides the point to the left, and the answers get small quickly. These free printable worksheets stick to dividing, which is the direction children find harder.

What's on this sheet

The difficulty is the zeros that have to appear right after the point. 6.47 ÷ 1000 is 0.00647, and a child has to write 0.00 before the first digit from the question appears. Getting comfortable with an answer that looks that small is the point of the page.

Why this sheet works

Every answer is smaller than the number it started from, and that gives a quick check. It also sets up what comes next: dividing by 1000 is how metric units step down, so 6.47 grams is 0.00647 kilograms for exactly the same reason.

How this one works

6.47 ÷ 1000

6.47÷1000
0.647
0.0647
0.00647
  1. 1000 is 10 × 10 × 10, so there are 3 moves to make — one for each ten.
  2. ÷ 10 — every digit is worth a tenth as much, so the point moves one place left: 0.647.
  3. ÷ 10 again: 0.0647.
  4. ÷ 10 again: 0.00647. The digits stay the same — only the point moves. 6.47 ÷ 1000 = 0.00647.
