Counting says how many; an ordinal says which one. A child who counts to twenty fluently can still hand you the wrong object when asked for the fourth, which is what these free printable worksheets practise.

What's on this sheet
Every row names a position in words — first, second, third — rather than as 4th, because the word is the lesson: "fourth" is what a teacher says and what a child has to attach to a place in a line. The sheet says once, at the top, to count from the left, because "third" from the other end is a different object.
Why this sheet works
Positions run to tenth or to twentieth. Past tenth English stops being irregular, so the upper level is practice rather than new vocabulary, and the objects are laid out ten to a row so a long line stays countable.
