Counting the parts of a solid is harder than it sounds, because half of them are round the back. These free printable worksheets draw each prism and pyramid with the hidden edges dashed, and ask for the faces, the edges or the corners.

The dashed lines are the whole lesson. A drawing of a cube shows nine edges and hides three, and a child who counts what they can see gets nine every time and cannot tell why it is wrong. Once the hidden edges are drawn in, counting becomes possible — and the habit of asking what is behind the shape is the one that transfers to every solid afterwards.
Prisms and pyramids are worth meeting together because their patterns run in parallel. A prism on an n-sided base has n + 2 faces and 2n vertices; a pyramid has n + 1 faces and n + 1 vertices. Nobody should be told those formulas, but a child who counts enough of them starts to notice, and noticing is the point.
