The sheets step through the same ladder a curriculum uses. One-step addition and subtraction come first — x + 5 = 12 — where a single inverse operation frees x. One-step multiplication and division follow, including the coefficient form 3x = 21 and the division form x ÷ 4 = 3. Two-step equations like 3x + 5 = 20 come last, where a child undoes the addition first and the multiplication second — the reverse of the order of operations.

Why this sheet works

Every equation is built backward from a whole-number solution, so x is always a positive integer a child can check by substituting it back in. That check — put the answer where x was and see if the two sides match — is the habit these pages are really training, and it is why the answer key doubles as a worked verification.

  1. One thing was done to x: 19 taken away. So there is one thing to undo, and undoing it is the opposite operation.
  2. The 19 went on last, so it comes off first — and off BOTH sides, or the two halves stop being equal. 21 + 19 = 40.
  3. Check by putting it back: (40) − 19 = 21. It holds, so x = 40.
