What's on this sheet

0.5 is five tenths, which reduces to one half. Reading the decimal out loud in words is the entire first step, because the words already say the fraction: "sixty-two hundredths" is 62/100 before anything has been worked out. Children who stall on this topic are almost always reading 0.62 as "nought point six two", which says nothing at all.

Why this sheet works

The number of decimal places tells you the denominator. One place is tenths, two is hundredths, three is thousandths — and that is a place-value fact rather than a fraction one, which is why this sheet is a good check on whether decimal place value is really secure.

How this one works

0.5 as a fraction

  1. A decimal already IS a fraction — 0.5 is 5 tenths. That is what the places after the point mean.
  2. 5 goes into both 5 and 10, so take it off both: 5 ÷ 5 = 1 and 10 ÷ 5 = 2. 5/10 and 1/2 are the same amount, and 2 is as far down as it goes.
