Plot a figure in all four quadrants worksheets

Once the grid has negative numbers, a figure can sit across an axis. These free printable worksheets give polygon corners in all four quadrants, an empty grid for each one and a side to measure, with an answer sheet that draws the finished figure.

What's on this sheet

Plotting works just as it did before: first number across, second number up, and a negative number goes the other way. The new difficulty is the measuring. When a side crosses an axis, the two coordinates can have different signs, and the length is not what you get by subtracting the digits you can see.

Why this sheet works

A side from (−3, 2) to (4, 2) is 7 units long, because it runs 3 to reach the axis and then 4 more. Counting the squares shows it straight away, and that picture is what makes the rule about subtracting a negative feel true rather than just remembered. This is a good sheet to come back to after integer subtraction.

How this one works

A(−3, 2) B(3, 2) C(1, −1)

A(−3, 2)B(3, 2)C(1, −1)
AB=6 units
  1. Plot each point: the first number goes across and the second goes up. Then join them in order and back to A.
  2. AB joins (−3, 2) and (3, 2). Their second numbers match, so the side is level, and its length is how far apart the other numbers are: 3 − (−3) = 6 units.
