Splitting is the strategy that rescues this table. 7 × 8 is hard; 5 × 8 = 40 and 2 × 8 = 16 are both easy, and they add to 56. Every seven fact can be broken into a five fact plus a two fact, which turns the least memorable table into two of the most memorable ones. A child who owns this move has a way through every fact on the page rather than a list to survive.
Why this sheet works
The good news, and it is worth saying before the page starts, is that most of this table is already done. If the twos through sixes are secure, then 7 × 2 through 7 × 6 are the same facts read backwards, and 7 × 10 is free. What is genuinely new is 7 × 7, 7 × 8, and 7 × 9 — three facts, not ten. Framing it that way changes how big the task feels.

- 5 × 7 means 5 groups with 7 in each one — 5 rows of 7. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
- That is 5 lots of 7, added up: 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 35. The × sign is short for exactly that sum.
- If 5 × 7 will not come, split the 7 at five: 5 × 5 = 25, and 5 × 2 = 10. Together that is 25 + 10 = 35.
- So 5 × 7 = 35.
