Every answer ends in a five or a zero, alternating all the way up. That is not a trick to hide from a child — it is the point. A learner who notices the pattern gains a way to check their own work, and self-checking is worth more than the ten facts themselves.

Why this sheet works

Counting by fives is usually secure long before multiplication is introduced, thanks to hands, nickels, and clock faces. If the facts feel hard, the fastest route is not more drilling but a few minutes of counting 5, 10, 15, 20 out loud — the table is that sequence with the position numbered.

  1. 9 × 5 means 9 groups with 5 in each one — 9 rows of 5. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
  2. Added up, that is 5 written 9 times — nobody wants to do that. Turn it round: 5 × 9 is the same amount, and it is only 5 lots of 9 to add instead.
  3. Nines are the easy ones. 5 × 10 = 50, and nine groups is one group short of ten — so take one 5 back off: 50 − 5 = 45.
  4. So 9 × 5 = 45.
