What's on this sheet
"Add a zero" gets the right answer and teaches the wrong idea. What actually happens is that every digit moves one place to the left: the 7 in 7 × 10 = 70 is no longer worth seven ones, it is worth seven tens, and the zero is what holds the empty ones column. Children taught the shortcut without the reason are the ones who later write 7.5 × 10 = 7.50.

- 8 × 10 means 8 groups with 10 in each one — 8 rows of 10. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
- Added up, that is 10 written 8 times — nobody wants to do that. Turn it round: 10 × 8 is the same amount, and it is only 10 lots of 8 to add instead.
- If 8 × 10 will not come, split the 10 at five: 8 × 5 = 40, and 8 × 5 = 40. Together that is 40 + 40 = 80.
- So 8 × 10 = 80.
