The chain is longer than the one for the fours, so it is slower, but slow-and-correct beats fast-and-guessed while a table is still being learned, and speed arrives on its own with repetition.
Why this sheet works
The other way in is subtraction from the tens. 8 × 7 is 10 × 7 = 70 minus two sevens, which is 56. This is worth having alongside the doubling chain because it is quicker for the larger facts, and because it is the same move that makes the nine times table easy — teaching the two tables as one idea rather than two.

- That is 3 lots of 8, added up: 8 + 8 + 8 = 24. The × sign is short for exactly that sum.
- If 3 × 8 will not come, split the 8 at five: 3 × 5 = 15, and 3 × 3 = 9. Together that is 15 + 9 = 24.
