What's on this sheet
The strategy is one group short of ten. 9 × 7 is 10 × 7 = 70 minus one seven, which is 63. Since the ten times table is the easiest thing a child owns, every nine fact is a single subtraction away from being free, and this is the honest version of the tricks that usually get taught for this table.
Why this sheet works
The digits of every answer add to nine — 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81 — which gives a child something the other tables do not have: a way to check an answer without knowing the fact. If the digits do not sum to nine, the answer is wrong. That is a real mathematical property, not a memory aid, and it is the first time many children meet the idea that arithmetic can be verified rather than merely recalled.

- That is 3 lots of 9, added up: 9 + 9 + 9 = 27. The × sign is short for exactly that sum.
- Nines are the easy ones. 3 × 10 = 30, and nine groups is one group short of ten — so take one 3 back off: 30 − 3 = 27.
