Double, then double again. 7 × 4 becomes double seven is fourteen, double fourteen is twenty-eight — two easy steps instead of one hard fact. This works for every entry in the table without exception, which makes the fours the best possible place for a child to learn that a hard fact can be broken into two facts they already have.
Why this sheet works
The reason it works is worth showing rather than asserting. Four rows of seven can be drawn, then a line drawn across the middle: two rows of seven above, two rows below. The array splits into two halves a child can already count, and the doubling strategy stops being a trick to remember and becomes something visible on paper.

- 5 × 4 means 5 groups with 4 in each one — 5 rows of 4. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
- That is 5 lots of 4, added up: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20. The × sign is short for exactly that sum.
- So 5 × 4 = 20.
