7 × __ = 42 is 42 ÷ 7 wearing different clothes, and meeting it in this form first is what makes division feel like something already known rather than a new operation to learn. It is also exactly what third-grade standards ask for by name: determine the unknown number in a multiplication equation.
Why this sheet works
Either factor can be the hidden one, so a child cannot settle into always dividing by the number on the left. Reading the sentence properly — which number is known, which one is the product — is half of what the page trains, and it is the half that transfers to algebra.
How this one works
One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.
8 × ? = 80
- The gap is not at the end this time — the ANSWER is already there. What is missing is one of the two numbers going in, so the sum cannot just be worked left to right.
- Multiplying is undone by dividing. 8 of something makes 80, so the something is 80 shared into 8: 80 ÷ 8.
- Put it back in to be sure: 8 × 10 = 80. It holds, so the missing number is 10.
