What's on this sheet

The tables past twelve are not new facts to memorize from scratch. Every one of them is a small fact plus a ten fact — 17 × 6 is 60 plus 42 — or a double of a table already known — 16 × 6 is 8 × 6 doubled. A mixed sheet is where a child learns to pick the quicker route for each fact, which is the real skill.

Why this sheet works

Most facts on the page have at least one factor over twelve, so the numbers are bigger than on the 12 × 12 sheet and the work is more mental arithmetic than recall. That is the point: it builds the splitting habit that long multiplication will lean on later.

How this one works

  1. 10 × 4 means 10 groups with 4 in each one — 10 rows of 4. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
  2. Added up, that is 4 written 10 times — that is a lot of adding. Turn it round: 4 × 10 is the same amount, and it is only 4 lots of 10 to add instead.
  3. If 4 × 10 will not come, split the 10 at five: 4 × 5 = 20, and 4 × 5 = 20. Together that is 20 + 20 = 40.
  4. So 10 × 4 = 40.
