What's on this sheet

Double the number, then make it ten times bigger. 20 × 7: double 7 is 14, so the answer is 140. 20 × 13: double 13 is 26, so 260. The doubling does the work and the zero is place value, which is why this table is a good check on whether a child understands what the zero means.

Why this sheet works

The mistake to watch for is two zeros where there should be one. 20 × 10 is 200, but 20 × 9 is 180, not 1800; a child who is attaching zeros by rule rather than by meaning will drift. Asking "is it about ten times 18?" is usually enough to catch it.

  1. 15 × 20 means 15 groups with 20 in each one — 15 rows of 20. The answer counts everything in all of them, not one row.
  2. Added up, that is 20 written 15 times — that is a lot of adding. Turn it round: 20 × 15 is the same amount, and it is only 20 lots of 15 to add instead.
  3. If 15 × 20 will not come, split the 20 at five: 15 × 5 = 75, and 15 × 15 = 225. Together that is 75 + 225 = 300.
  4. So 15 × 20 = 300.
