Multiplying by multiples of ten worksheets

3 × 40 is 3 × 4 tens. These free printable worksheets are the bridge between knowing the times tables and using them on bigger numbers, and they teach it as place value rather than as a trick with zeros.

What's on this sheet

The strategy is the standard here, not a shortcut to it. A child who knows 3 × 4 = 12 already knows 3 × 40 — what has to be learnt is that the answer is twelve TENS, which is 120. Getting there by counting zeros works and teaches nothing, and it stops working at the first decimal.

Why this sheet works

Both orders appear. 3 × 40 reads as “three lots of forty” and 40 × 3 puts the ten in front, which is where a child who has only met one order sometimes stalls. Each sheet carries a mixture.

How this one works

90 × 2

2 × 9=18
18 × 10=180
  1. 90 is 9 × 10, so start with the table fact: 2 × 9 = 18.
  2. Now multiply by ten: 18 × 10 = 180.
