Equal groups and arrays worksheets

Rows of counters, and under each one a sum with every addend the same. This is the page before multiplication: the child writes 4 + 4 + 4 for three rows of four, and the times sign comes later to say the same thing shorter.

What's on this sheet

Every number in the sentence is a blank, the addends as well as the total. The second-grade standard asks a child to write the equation, not to finish one, and a sum printed with its addends already filled in is a sheet that asks for one addition. Writing 5 + 5 + 5 is how a child notices that the picture is the same group three times.

Why this sheet works

The pictures stop at five rows of five, which is where the standard stops too. Inside that, the sheet mixes long thin arrays, short wide ones and squares, so three rows of five and five rows of three can turn up on the same page — the same total from a different sum, which is worth a question of its own.
