What's on this sheet
Fives start on a multiple of five, so every number on the page ends in a 5 or a 0. That alternation is the pattern being learned and it is the thing to point at: a child who notices that the ones digit only ever has two values has already found half the answer before counting.
Why this sheet works
Counting by fives is the arithmetic under a clock face and under tally marks, which is why 2.NBT.A.2 names it beside tens and hundreds. It is also the count a child will use for the rest of school without being asked to — five minutes, five cents, five in a tally bundle.

- Work out the jump from numbers you can SEE — never from the gap, because the gap is what you are trying to find.
- 55 to 60 is up 5, and a counting sequence jumps the same amount every time.
- So the gap is 65 + 5 = 70.
