What's on this sheet
Four of the five questions are the ones a place value sheet has always asked: what the underlined digit is worth, which digit sits in a named place, what that place is called, and the number written out as 300 + 40 + 7. The fifth runs the last one backwards — given 300 + 40 + 7, write the number — and it is the one worth doing last. Saying “three hundred, forty, seven” is easy to do without believing it; writing 347 back from those parts is where a child who does not yet trust the columns writes 3407 instead.
Why this sheet works
The numbers with a zero in the middle are the whole point, so they are dealt on purpose rather than left to luck. 407 and 470 are what place value is about; 358 can be read straight across by a child who has never thought about a column in their life. Every page carries some of the first kind.
