What's on this sheet

Each problem asks for two answers: how many whole groups (the quotient) and how many are left over (the remainder), written as 17 ÷ 5 = 3 R 2. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor, which is the check a child should learn to make every time. Choose how far the divisors go to set the difficulty.

  1. 33 shared into groups of 5. Long division starts at the LEFT — the other way round from adding.
  2. Start at the left. How many 5s fit into 33? 6 of them — write the 6 on top. 6 × 5 = 30, and 33 − 30 leaves 3.
  3. Nothing is left to bring down, and 3 is too small to divide again — so that is the remainder. 33 ÷ 5 = 6 remainder 3.
