Long division worksheets

Long division walks a child through divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — one place at a time. These free printable worksheets set out the division house for dividends of the chosen length over a one- or two-digit divisor, with exact whole-number quotients.

Long division worksheet — Dividend ÷ 1–2 digit, free printable with answer key

The answer key prints on a separate page.

What's on this sheet

Each problem prints the long-division bracket with the divisor outside and the dividend inside, and the sheet lays out just two tall rows so there is real room to work the steps downward beneath each one. The divisor size and dividend length are yours to set — a three-digit dividend over a single-digit divisor to start, up to four digits over a two-digit divisor for grade five.

Why this sheet works

Every quotient comes out whole. Remainders are a real topic, but they are left out here on purpose so a child can master the rhythm of the algorithm — estimate, multiply back, subtract, bring the next digit down — before the extra judgment a remainder demands. The answer key prints each quotient on a separate page.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

648 ÷ 3

216 3648 64318180
  1. 648 shared into groups of 3. Long division starts at the LEFT — the other way round from adding.
  2. Start at the left. How many 3s fit into 6? 2 of them — write the 2 on top. 2 × 3 = 6, and 6 − 6 leaves 0. Bring down the 4, which makes 4.
  3. How many 3s fit into 4? 1 — write it on top. 1 × 3 = 3, and 4 − 3 leaves 1. Bring down the 8, which makes 18.
  4. How many 3s fit into 18? 6 — write it on top. 6 × 3 = 18, and 18 − 18 leaves 0.
  5. Nothing is left to bring down and nothing is left over. 648 ÷ 3 = 216.
